Blog Jargon

When I first started reading blogs (knitting/craft blogs in particular), I was pretty confused by the abbreviations. What the hell is a WIP?! I was pretty proud of myself when I eventually worked it out, it’s Work In Progress. It made sense if I looked at the articles entitled WIPs. A quick Google appeased any doubt, I was right! 

So, I thought I would put together a few of the things I’ve worked out, to share wth anyone else who was as confused as I was. I even looked for comments where people had already asked so I could sneak a look at the answer, but I couldn’t find anyone asking. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a rediculous question. Was some other knitter going to be thinking “she doesn’t know what a FO is? Bet she hasn’t even heard of a GBJHIG!” Okay, I made that last one up, you got me.

A FO seems to be a Finished Object. 

And a UFO? An UnFinished Object. This sounds to me, a lot like a WIP. I wasn’t going to include it in this post originally, as I’ve not really seen it used much, as opposed to a WIP and I thought they were the same thing. As I did some reading though, I found out that a UFO is a project that has been started, hasn’t been finished and has been sort of abandoned for the time being. A WIP, on the other hand, is an unfinished project that is currently being worked on. I found this post pretty useful for explaining the difference between the two and a few others that I hadn’t heard of:

Frogging (I guess this isn’t really a blog term, but I didn’t know what it was until recently), is when you pull back some stitches to fix a mistake. Google says that it might be called frogging because ‘rip it, rip it’ sounds like ‘ribbit, ribbit.’ Ripping seems very dramatic but I do feel like a bit of a mad woman taking my rage out on my knitting when I frantically pull the stitches back out, so perhaps it’s appropriate.
NaKniSweMo – National Knit a Sweater Month. There are proper rules and everything! This one really stumped me. There was no way I was going to work it out. There are lots of other ones as well that start with Na and end in Mo, you just have to find something that fits in the middle. A quick Google wouldn’t go a miss though, incase you decide you want to give NaNoWriMo a go, thinking its National Nordic Wriggling Month, and it turns out to be National Novel Writing Month. Embarrassing!
